Jacob Maris
(The Hague 1837-1899 Karlsbad)
"Italian country scene with a Shepherd and Shepherdness under a tree"
on panel: 22 x 18 cm; signed and dated '58
Provenance
from a private Dutch collection.
NotesThe present painting is an early work painted by Maris when he was twenty years old. Very different from the subdued greyish-dark palette, typical of the Hague School, orange and pink colours dominate this pastoral scene. A Shepherd and Shepherdess pass the time under a tree where a soft breeze bristles through the leaves and the setting sun basks the Italian countryside in rays of warm sunlight. Even before Maris began painting pastoral scenes and ‘Italiennes’ in Paris, he was already acquainted with the genre.
